THE LANGUAGE AND HUMANITIES PROGRAM
Requirements for the Language and Humanities Program:
An overall GPA of 2.75 is required for admission. Additionally, applicants will need at least 2 - 2 & 1/2 years of prior Spanish language study with a GPA in these language courses of no less than 3.0.
The Language and Humanities Program Profile:
Before the start of formal instruction within the University of Seville, all participants go through an orientation session in which they are introduced into the socio-cultural reality of really living in Seville and Spain. The contrast and comparison of American and Spanish attitudes, mores, social habits, and customs are the focus. In lectures, visits, and small peer-group sessions, students work together to reach conclusions on the nature of their reaction to the new environment. Very practical language workshops on particular aspects of the participants’ active skills also constitute part of the orientation sessions.
Organized in cooperation with the University of Seville’s Cursos Para Extranjeros, the program itself serves the academic needs of students who are still perfecting their language skills while satisfying academic requirements in the fields of the Humanities. All instruction and program activities are in Spanish. The intensity of instruction increases as the participants’ language skills mature. The program builds onto each Cursos by offering outside activities that allow students to use Seville and Andalusia as an experimental laboratory to convert in-class theory into living reality. These outside activities are serious components of the study plan. Papers and tutorials based on them will constitute a factor in the grade of the corresponding course. Participants may take up to two regular Seville degree credit courses if they will constitute part of the home campus major, and if prior academic work at home is judged to be sufficient basis for a study in courses for the Spanish degree.
After acceptance into the program, ISEPS will name an Advisor/Counselor for each participant. The Advisor/Counselor and the participant meet once a week to review progress, solve problems, and find resources for the satisfaction of goals. In a real sense the Advisor/Counselor and the participant constitute a mini-program within the Language and Humanities Program.
See “Course Outlines” for more information. To apply see “Application Form”.
On receipt of the ISEPS Application Form, ISEPS will confirm the applicant admission to the Seville courses that he/she has identified. The applicant will have an add-drop option period.

THE ADVANCED STUDIES PROGRAM (ASP)
Requirements for the Advanced Studies Program:
Applicants need an overall GPA of at least 3.0, and a GPA in the major of 3.2. A telephone interview in Spanish is mandatory to confirm that the applicant has the adequate language skills for ASP. The applicant agrees that all oral communication will be in Spanish. All academic courses will be taken within one of Seville’s degree programs for Spanish students.
The Advanced Studies Program Profile:
During the orientation period, the participant will experience a non-credit orientation session. This multi-focused activity will be orientated to the participant’s acclimatization to Seville, Spain and the University of Seville. The objective will be to ensure that the applicant is comfortable in his/her new setting in which he/she will live and work for some four months. This will ensure that the participant is ready to take maximum advantage of his/her stay abroad. Although the participant’s language skills are very superior, there will be weak points. Maybe vocabulary is a weakness, as an example. In any case focused language study for settings and situations and levels of expression will be part of orientation. Peer group sessions will be set up to help the participant understand appropriate reactions to Spaniards and their way of doing things and reacting to the participant.
ASP is not just a liberal arts program. The participant can study in almost any of Seville’s schools if he/she arrives with the academic background for work in a particular field or courses. Although the normal course load would be four or five courses, the participant might want to do a special research project. If this were the case, it would have to be approved prior to arrival and a Home Campus Advisor would have to underwrite the project and be available via e-mail for consultations, where it is deemed necessary at a critical point in the development of the project. A research project would probably mean less formal classes as part of the participant’s study plan. Please understand that ISEPS considers a research project to be an option only for those who have a real background in the field. The participant’s home transcript would have to confirm this fact. All courses are given within the University of Seville for its own degree programs. In ASP you will be given a permanent Advisor/Counselor. He or she will work with the participant from admission into the program until return home. The Advisor/Counselor will meet with the participant at least once a week in one-on-one meetings that are used to review all ongoing student work, in conformity with full home campus expectations and objectives for the study abroad experience. That is where Spain really lives. For example, the participant may be a music lover. If so the participant will be given tickets to concerts, introduced to associations and clubs where he/she will meet people with whom he/she has something in common. In that way a real relationship based on mutual interests with Spaniards will be a reality. There can be no early examinations in ASP. This is due to the fact that the participant will be taking Seville degree credit courses, and by university regulations there can be but ONE EXAM for everyone in any course. All courses carry a three-credit recommendation.
Selecting Courses:
With the Home Campus Advisor, the participant will list and briefly outline those courses at his/her home institution that he/she would take if staying on campus. Then the participant will select the courses he/she would like to take at the University of Seville. If this proves too difficult, contact ISEPS at once. ISEPS will step in to suggest options to the participant. This list may contain more courses than the participant will really take. After studying the form for courses that the participant intends to study, the ISEPS Advisor/Counselor will review the options with the participant so that he/she and the Home Campus Advisor can put a final study plan in place. Remember - if the participant is planning on a research project, he/she must be sure to outline it with a home expert first. ISEPS has no objection to the home expert being the authority for credit and grade in cases of research projects.
See “Course Outlines” for more information. To apply see “Application Form”.
On receipt of the ISEPS Application Form and with successful completion of the mandatory telephone interview, ISEPS will confirm the applicant’s admission to the Seville courses that he/she has identified. The applicant will have an add-drop option period.

THE ADVANCED PROGRAM FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS (APBE)
Requirements for the Advanced Program for Business and Economics:
For business administration students who have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and a GPA in the major of 3.2. Students will undergo a telephone interview in Spanish to ensure that they can understand spoken Spanish. The participant agrees that all oral communication be in Spanish.
The Advanced Program for Business and Economics Profile:
The APBE Program begins with a non-credit orientation period in which the students new to Spain are initiated into the socio-cultural reality of working and doing business in the Hispanic and Mediterranean worlds. Through visits and meetings with Spanish and American leaders in business, participants will come to understand the nature of doing business in a world different from the one at home. Critical issues of image projection and formality vs. Informality in relationships, and how social and cultural foundations influence us are key elements of attention. How do Spaniards see us and why do they see us in this or that way? What are the consequences of images in international business? Why do I react to Spain as I do? Through small peer group sessions students help each other to understand why we react to Spain as we do. A part of the orientation period is given over to the study of the nature of oral and written communications in the Spanish language of the European Community and the academic/scientific Spanish of the business and economics class room.
With APBE the participant takes the courses in business administration and economics that Spanish students take as part of their degree requirements in these fields. The participant may also take courses in the area of the sciences or humanities in the other schools of the university as long as his/her background confirms acceptable preparation for such studies. To be considered a participant in APBE at least two courses in business and economics must be part of the study plan. A credit-granting and monitored internship without pay but in the participant’s major may constitute part of the study plan. Normally a participant would take four courses but if a credit-earning internship is part of the study plan, the participant might take only two or three courses. All courses carry a three-credit recommendation. At the time of acceptance, APBE will name an Advisor/Counselor for the participant. He/she will work with participant and the Home Campus Advisor to ensure that the details of the study plan are clearly worked out prior to arrival, and followed during the stay in Seville. In reality, the APBE Advisor/Counselor and the participant constitute a mini-program within APBE. The Advisor/Counselor also monitors any internship in which the participant may be placed. The participant and Advisor/Counselor will meet once a week to ensure that progress is being made. If there are any changes in the original study plan or its objectives, the Home Campus Advisor will be informed for his/her input.
The participant is urged to leave some options or alternates just in case of conflicts. Then the application form is to be sent to ISEPS. The Advisor/Counselor will review it – based on the participant’s home campus transcript – and contact the participant if there are any issues and questions. If that is the case, the ISEPS Advisor/Counselor will suggest options for the participant and the Home Campus Advisor to consider.
In APBE the participant studies with Spanish peers. In the internship component of the APBE Program, the participant will work under a Spanish Supervisor as a professional part of his/her team. In conjunction with the classes and the internship, ISEPS will organize relevant workshops and other activities that will contribute to the participant’s study abroad goals, and also allow peer input into matters of mutual concern. In essence, the participant and the Advisor/Counselor become an efficient problem solving team.

CREDIT FOR COURSES
All participants in all ISEPS Programs meet for 45 contact hours of in-class time lectures and discussions – per course taken - plus added ISEPS projects. Each course carries a three-credit recommendation.
While the Language and Humanities Program has a straightforward approach, please note the following considerations as regards the Advanced Studies Program (ASP) and the Advanced Program for Business and Economics (APBE):
* Participants in the ASP Program are expected to carry 12 to 15 credits. No courses from Cursos para Extranjeros are considered of sufficient level for ASP students. All courses must be from those for which the University of Seville gives degree credit to Spanish students.
* The APBE Program internship may allow a credit recommendation, as determined by the Home Campus Advisor. ISEPS would prefer that it be valued at three to six credits. The internship will be monitored and regular reports and evaluations of the experience will constitute part of the report to the home institution. The internship will be in the area of the participants’ home major. 12 to 15 credits per semester are considered a full load.
* Formal work realized outside of class, as organized by ISEPS at Seville, will be a considered factor in the final grade.
Sample Course Descriptions

There the participant/applicant will find connections to all Facultades (Schools) and Institutos/Colegios of the University of Seville.
GRADING POLICY
Since ISEPS participants will be registered at the University of Seville through the Office of the Director General for International Relations or through the Facultad or Escuela Superior of the University of Seville, a grade scale has to be in place. The Spanish grade scale from TEN to ZERO corresponds to the 4.0 to 0.0 scale in the US as follows:
10.00 - 9.00 = A
8.99 - 8.75 = A-
8.74 - 8.25 = B+
8.24 - 7.50 = B
7.49 - 7.00 = B-
6.99 - 6.50 = C+
6.49 - 5.00 = C
4.99 - 4.50 = C-
4.49 - 4.00 = D
3.99 - 0.00 = F
Each applicant is to make sure that his/her Home Campus Advisor knows what he/she plans to do. ISEPS is willing to work with the applicant via e-mail, but keep in mind that it is the Home Campus Advisor who has the final say in any issue regarding credit for courses taken at Seville, irrespective of what the applicant and ISEPS prefer. Please note the following process for applying to ISEPS:
1. The applicant sends ISEPS a copy of his/her transcript. ISEPS will then use it to advise the applicant as to the appropriateness of the course selection. The final determination rests with the applicant, in concert with the Home Campus Advisor.
2. The applicant identifies the courses that he/she would be taking at home were he/she to stay on campus. The applicant is to be certain that, besides the course title, he/she gives a brief description of the course content. With that brief information, ISEPS can better recommend courses in Seville to the applicant.
3. Then the applicant is to look through the courses as suggested by ISEPS in this web page, relating a home campus course to a similar one in the University of Seville. The applicant is encouraged to contact ISEPS via e-mail regarding any questions or doubts that he/she may have concerning course selection. ISEPS will help the applicant to identify those Seville courses that are best suited to his/her present academic development.
4. When the applicant and the Home Campus Advisor are in agreement, the applicant is to fill out the application forms and e-mail or fax them to ISEPS, with the application fee of $50. See “Application Form”. ISEPS will review the forms and respond to the applicant with either an approval or suggestions.
- Language and Humanities Program applicants will receive notification of acceptance.
- The Advanced Programs - ASP and APBE - applicants must do a mandatory telephone interview in Spanish as a required part of the application process, prior to consideration for admission.
- In all cases, the applicant will be notified of acceptance or otherwise, and sent a letter accordingly.
5. Once admitted on a provisional basis to ISEPS, the participant will send ISEPS a finalized registration form that he/she and the Home Campus Advisor will have signed. There will be time to change and to add-drop in Seville but this document becomes ISEPS’s source reference for credit and academics.
6. At this juncture, each participant’s Advisor/Counselor in Seville is in place and ready to work with the participant and the Home Campus Advisor, as necessary. Once in Seville, the participant may change a particular course, providing that the change is acceptable to the Home Campus Advisor.
7. By now, all payments of program fees are due. Once received, the participant will be sent an official confirmation of admission. With this letter the participant can secure a VISA from the nearest Spanish consulate in the United States (please ask ISEPS for information here, if required).
Note - The Student Orientation part of this course is ISEPS’s sole responsibility. Advice and help will be given, initially in English, to all of the participants during the first few days after they arrive in Seville. This is designed to further ensure that the student is fully aware of safety, security and practical information from the beginning to enable the student to begin to blend into the Spanish way of life.
